Walt Disney World in Winter: What to Wear

It can get chilly in Central Florida as early as November. I went to Disney World the week before Thanksgiving, and I experienced a cold snap – it felt frigid! Keep in mind, I live in New England, so I know what cold can feel like. And while “cold” is relative, you will be surprised at how chilly it can feel at Walt Disney World.

There’s a reason Disney World puts its jackets and sweatshirts on mobile racks and wheels everything to the front of gift shops in the winter months…people don’t prepare! Trust me, I’ve been there where I totally under-packed for a winter trip to Disney World. That’s why I came up with this list of essentials you definitely want to bring with you if you are visiting Disney World between November and March.

Dress in Layers

The key to a successful winter outfit at Walt Disney World is to dress in layers. It can still warm up and even be pretty hot any time of year in Florida, so you don’t want to leave all your t-shirts behind.

That said, you want to bring a sweatshirt or long-sleeve shirt to throw on and off as the temperatures fluctuate. You may need a sweatshirt for the morning, but in the afternoon, you can store it in your park bag before pulling it out again in the evening. Winter is a great time to pack those spirit jerseys you have collected over the years.

Outerwear

You’ll want to double-check the forecast before your winter trip to Disney World, but I’d recommend you pack a jacket along with some additional outerwear this time of year. You don’t need to pack your heaviest winter coat–a packable jacket will do, especially if you wear it over those layers I mentioned above. A fun denim jacket could work well, too.

Magic Kingdom

On top of a jacket, I’d also throw a hat or beanie in your bag. They don’t take up much space, and they can come in handy at nighttime. I know we’re talking about Disney World specifically, but when I lived in Southern California, I wore a beanie all the time to Disneyland in the winter months. It makes a big difference!

For Your Hands and Feet

I love the feeling of needing to sip on a hot coffee on a brisk morning at Walt Disney World. If you can’t get your hands on a hot coffee, then you’ll need something else to warm your hands. You think I’m insane for telling you to pack gloves and hand warmers, but I’m telling you, you may need them!

Japan Pavilion at EPCOT

The same goes for your feet. You definitely do not need to bring heavy winter boots to Florida – sneakers will suffice – but you may want to consider packing thicker socks.

Year-Round Staples

No matter when you visit Walt Disney World, there are many essential clothing items you want to pack for maximum comfort. Of course, there are your best walking shoes (now is not the time to break in a new pair! Pack your most reliable pair of sneakers), sunglasses, etc. And I’ll never skip an opportunity to remind you to pack sunscreen and apply it liberally!
