The only thing constant at Walt Disney World is change, and some big changes are on the way to Magic Kingdom. The latest update out of Disney World when it comes to change is taking place in Tomorrowland.

Aside from the previously announced changes like Cars coming to Frontierland and a new Disney Villains land in the works, some of Magic Kingdom’s existing attractions are undergoing some major renovations. Keep reading to find out which of Tomorrowland’s rides will close for an extensive multi-month renovation.
Disney World Attraction To Temporarily Close For Extensive Renovation
Disney World announced today that Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will close in Tomorrowland for an extended renovation starting this August. The ride will reopen sometime in 2026.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is a slow-moving omnimover ride in Tomorrowland where guests of all ages (no height requirement!) can take aim and blast away the evil Emperor Zurg and his army of aliens. A version of the ride, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, can be found at Disneyland Park.

In this announcement, Disney shared that the changes taking place will include the addition of a new character and animatronic. This new character, named “Buddy,” will be featured in a new show scene at the start of the attraction. Buddy is a support-bot that provides a final systems check to riders as they test out the blasters.

The renovation also includes upgrades to the ride vehicles, and brand-new handheld blasters that will give guests more ease of movement and aiming. These new blasters will more closely resemble the ones used in the Disneyland version of the ride.

The blasters will feature haptic feedback and “always-on” lasers that will correspond with the color of the blaster. The Z targets seen throughout the ride will be upgraded with new technology that will have them light up when hit. The color of the target will correspond to your blaster (and each ride vehicle will feature two different colors). You know how difficult it is to find your tiny red laser amongst a sea of other tiny red lasers on Space Ranger Spin? It sounds like that problem will be a thing of the past!

A Lineup Of Attraction Upgrades at Walt Disney World
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is one of many Walt Disney World attractions undergoing renovations. Currently, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom is closed for an extensive refurbishment while work begins on the land behind the attraction that will be used for the upcoming Villain’s land. Big Thunder is closed for the remainder of 2025 and will reopen sometime in 2026.

Space Ranger Spin’s closure comes right on the heels of Astro Orbiter reopening, which is scheduled to take place sometime in the summer of 2025. The ride has been closed for refurbishment since January.

Over in EPCOT, Test Track is currently closed as it is being reimagined into a new version, with new show scenes and upgraded technology. Test Track 3.0 will reopen late summer 2025.

These changes represent some of the exciting changes in the works across Walt Disney World, including the Tropical Americas land coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Monstropolis coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Be sure to follow along as more changes are announced and new details are unveiled in the coming months.
